Raynes Park Vale v YM - FA Cup
Horsham YMCA's hopes of an FA Cup tie with tenants and local rivals Horsham were brutally dashed in the competition's extra preliminary round on Saturday afternoon, as they were comprehensively beaten 8-0 away at Raynes Park Vale.
The visitors only trailed 1-0 at the break, striker Simon Moore giving Raynes Park the lead, as YM wasted good first half chances through Matt Crane, Lee Smith and Kev Burgess.
But the Combined Counties Premier League outfit proved too strong for Peter Buckland's YM, who simply capitulated after half time, conceding seven sloppy second half goals.
The YM boss said, "It was a bad day at the office, and the key words that come to mind are embarrassed and let down really. We tried something tactical-wise, and it absolutely capitulated on us."
Callum Forbes and a second from Moore put the hosts in a commanding position midway through the second period, before a brilliant finish from Mark Walters and a brace apiece from Jack Williamson and Peter Hickford completed the rout.
"We set up 3-5-2 and it worked perfectly up until half time." Buckland added. "However, immediately after the break they scored quite a fortuitous second goal which knocked the stuffing out of us a bit. I changed it to 4-3-3 because we were 2-0 down and chasing the game, but we just couldn't get to grips with the formation.
"Sometimes there are positives that can be taken from disasters though. Every team has got one of these results, and one of these bad days in them, and I'm glad that ours is hopefully out of the way. I'm also glad it wasn't in the league because of the goal difference, and hopefully it also comes as a bit of a wakeup call to the players."
YM will have to swiftly put their FA Cup disappointment behind them, ready for a return to league action away at Shoreham on Saturday.
Buckland concluded, "Although I did blow my top a bit [on Saturday], I've been in football long enough to know that it achieves absolutely nothing. It's usually a case of the manager showing off rather than having any impact on future results, so afterwards I told them that the outburst was impulsive and non-productive.
"We'll get together Monday and have a chat about the game, then we'll train Tuesday and Thursday and we'll be up for Shoreham on Saturday - just watch this space."
