SAMMY Donnelly admitted his Horsham YMCA side have nothing but pride to play for this season following Tuesday night’s 3·0 loss at Three Bridges.
YM were second best through out against a side bang in form and unbeaten in 19 matches, as Elliot Romain, Andy Howard and Lee Carney bagged the goals to cement fifth place for Bridges, who have up to five games in hand on their promotion rivals thanks to their FA Vase run.
And although Donnelly was impressed with a resolute effort at the back, he had to hold his hands up. "The first half was really a case of having to defend a bit deep, they really got us on the back foot," he said.
"We had to defend resolutely For us it’s just a matter of staying up now There is nothing to play for I’m saying to the players to try and take a bit of pride from our performances. There is no disgrace in losing to Three Bridges."
The hosts dominated the first half and got their reward three minutes before the break. A straightforward ball down the middle split the YM defence, and Romain got there fractionally ahead of keeper Simon Lockwood to nudge home the opener.
There was more of the same in the second half, and Howard headed in the second on 48 minutes, as he took advantage of sloppy marking at a corner:
And nine minutes lateig Carney notched Bridges’ third goal from the spot after Dan Sullivan let his frustrations get the better of him and felled his man.
YM did have some joy, especially after switching from 4-3-3 to 4-2-2, and George Hillier and Tim· Martin could both have done better with openings.
Donnelly added: "We had one or two good chances in the last 20 minutes."
