JOHN CUl\/IBERBATCH struggled to find anything positive as his lowly Horsham YMCA side slumped to a 3-0 defeat away against an organised Walton & Hersham on Saturday.

The hosts enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and also missed a penalty at the end of the first half, and while the win keeps alive their play-off ambitions for bottom side YM it was their fourth loss on the spin, their 24th all season and only accelerates their inevitable relegation back to the County League. Cumberbatch said: "There weren’t. too many positives from Saturday it was difficult because they were very organised and far better than when we played them a few weeks ago when I thought their 2-0 win was a bit fortunate.

"This time they dominated almost all areas and I was disappointed with our showing, we had no creativity at all".

YM stopper Mark Fox was called into early rearguard action, tipping over a shot from Chris Wales before Gary Frewen struck a free kick straight at him. At the opposite end striker Tony Reid just failed to get onto Scott Harris’s ball into the Swans’ six yard box.

Swans did take the lead on 33 minutes when Bakary Bojang bundled in, but right on half time Gary Frewen blazed a penalty high over the bar for the hosts.

Shaun Elliott did double the Swans tally after the break and Bojang cleverly back heeled for Ashley Quashie to round the scoring off.

The defeat leaves YM ten points adrift of their nearest rivals, second bottom Corinthian Casuals having played two games more. Having replaced Colin Jenkinson only in December with the side rooted to the foot of the table Cumberbatch‘s task was always a difficult one. A surprise win over then leaders Met Police proved a false dawn and the boss has now conceded relegation is a near certainty but restated his intention to remain at the club next season.

He said: "Staying up is now no longer realistic, l’ve said in recent weeks it will take a miracle, now it will take more than a miracle to avoid relegation.

"But it’s important we stay professional and look to get a few results because I’m now looking at next season, whatever league we’ll be in.

"I don’t want to be starting from scratch, l want to have the nucleus of the side already in place. I’m not intending ongoing anywhere and will be looking to build a side to compete at the level we’re currently in."
