Following a convincing 3-0 win at home to league leaders, Met Police, just over a week ago, YM looked set to try and move on from the poor season and run of form that they’re currently experiencing. However, back to back defeats leave them rooted to the foot of the Ryman League Division One table, 4 points and three games adrift of closest rivals Whyteleafe.

And if Tuesday’s game is anything to go by, it seems YM boss John Cumberbatch still has a fair amount of work to do if his side are to avoid relegation at the end of the season. A lively start from the visitors was rewarded with a goal inside the first five minutes, but it was through no work of their own. An awful mix up in the YM defence saw stand-in centre back, Tony Reid, head the ball over his own ‘keeper, Mark Fox, and into an empty net.

It wasn’t exactly the start that YM had hoped for, but they continued to work hard and produced several opportunities that could have easily seen them enter the break with the score all square. Full back, Scott Harris, first saw his misguided free kick clip the woodwork, before a whipped cross from winger Spencer Sachies somehow failed to be latched onto, first by Gavin Gordon and then Sol Henry, both making late darts into the box. Walton ‘keeper, Gareth Williams, also made some smart saves to deny efforts from both Matt Simpson and Omal Folkes, allowing the Swans to hold on until the break.

The second period saw neither side really take the game by the scruff of the neck, and the only real highlight was the soft goal that YM conceded just after the restart. Skipper, Glen Woodburn, needlessly dived in on the edge of the box, gifting the visitors a free kick, which allowed youngster Gary Frewen to curl home past the outstretched dive of ‘keeper Fox. Cumberbatch did make changes mid-way through the second half, with Damian Ramsay and Dayo Oshitola again impressing at times, but it was to no avail, as Walton held on for all three points.

YM will look to regain some of their squad for Saturday’s game at home to Chatham Town, with the likes of Kevin Lott, Dan Duddley and Marc Cumberbatch all said to be on their way back. They will also look to hold on to skipper Glen Woodburn who was reportedly said to have been approached by former YM boss Chris White at Worthing earlier in the week, although the move was turned down.

Saturday’s fixture is a must win for YM, with The Chats just six spots above them in the league table and only seventeen games of the season left to keep the club from relegation.

YM (4-4-2): Fox, Harris, Woodburn, Reid, Plummer, Folkes, Simpson, Z Henry (B Bowra 50), Sachies (Ramsay 58), S Henry, Gordon (Oshitola 64)
