YM FIND themselves rock bottom of the Ryman League, and after Saturday’s results the outlook remains depressingly bleak.
However poor results have been for Colin Jenkinson’s side this season, there has always been the solace that Corinthian Casuals were just as bad. So when Corinthian
Casuals leapfrogged both YM, who went down 3-0 at home to Walton Casuals, and Whitstable Town, they sent the Gorings Mead outfit to the foot of the table.
It’s not as if YM were completely outclassed by Walton, but elementary errors were costly at vital moments. Exasperated boss Jenkinson said: "We were the best side
in the first half", their keeper pulled off some amazing saves.
"We put them on the back foot but didn’t take our chances. I kept saying if we turn them around we will create chances. For the first 15 minutes we were getting Antoine (Douglas) on the ball and getting into good positions where the final ball was not good enough".
"Then my players decide to play tippy tappy football on a sticky pitch."
"It’s about decision making. You can be the best technical player on the pitch but if you don’t follow your instructions you are lost."
Indeed, YM did start well, pressing the ball high up the pitch and giving the likes of Douglas the opportunity to run at his man. Unfortunately Douglas appeared reluctant
to do that and YM as a unit seemed to lack the confidence to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Walton created openings, such as a half chance for Mark Nicholls when Altie Arthur won a flick on, but it was an encouraging start for the hosts.
The impressive Tommy Brewer almost built on that with a free kick which kissed the outside of Walton stopper Jame Warrington’s post. A few minutes later Warrington
pulled off two superb stops. YM striker Gavin Gordon had bundled through two challenges and the ball broke for Joey Collewijn, who instead of shooting after rounding the keeper squared for Scott Kirkland whose shot was saved and then Douglas’ follow up was somehow kept out.
The home side were made to pay for not capitalising on that purple patch, as on 39 minutes they fell behind. Warrington boomed a big clearance downfield, it looked as if Sol Bowra or Glen Woodburn would deal with it, until somehow the ball hit Bowra’s heel and broke for Nicholls who comfortably beat keeper Conor Gough, on loan
from Charlton.
There was still plenty of energy in the YM midfield and moments into the second half Collewijn was denied a goal when Warrington parried his shot at the end of a neat move. Seconds later, perhaps encouraged by the slick passing in that build up, YM attempted one pass too many in the centre circle, and when Woodburn was sold short he lost a 50:50 challenge with the Stags’ Craig Lewington.
That allowed Walton to surge forward and Michael Barima sprinted on to the loose ball, slotting it past the helpless Gough.
Two goals behind and YM were in trouble, coaches Phil Fitzgerald and Dean Potter were named on the bench, so they didn’t have a lot of options there.
Walton were quite content with what they had, despite manager and former Crystal Palace man Neil Shipperley urging them on. The away side had yet to actually create a chance without it being handed on a plate, but a sweeping move led to the third goal. Joe Kelly galloped forward from right back and his cross was turned
into his own net by an under pressure Steve Newman.
YM are expecting a sizable crowd on Wednesday when they host Brighton in the Sussex Senior Cup.
