FOLLOWING the high of their fantastic mid-week win over Eastbourne Town, the reality of Horsham YMCA’s struggles was brought home to them with a 3-0 defeat at Godalming.

On a difficult Wey Court pitch there was precious little football, but the hosts proved the more composed in front of goal to run out comfortable Victors.

YM assistant manager Dean Potter said: "The pitch was awful, it was a scrappy game but to be fair to Godalming they played the pitch better than we did. .

"We were trying to play football on a pitch you couldn’t play football on while they were a bit more direct than us and it worked for them."

The hosts had a few early chances but couldn’t find a way past Mark Fox in the visiting goal until Lady Luck smiled on them. On 35 minutes a great challenge from Adam Cheadle squirmed straight to James Hennessy whoadjustedhis feet and shot low into the bottom corner of the net.

"That’s the sort of luck you get when you’re down at the bottom. lf you’re flying high at the top then that ball lands at one of our players," Potter lamented.

Godalming went into the half-time break with the breathing space of a 2-0 lead when, four minutes after the opener Gavin Smith converted after Graeme Purdy had forced a great save from Fox.

Godalming went into the halftime break happy with their two goal cushion and the second half was no different and they pulled further ahead when Graeme Purdy slotted home Brett Cooper’s excellent cross.

The game saw a debut for T new signing James Nicholls, a former Horsham player picked up from Tooting & Mitcham and he impressed at the heart of the YM defence.

'YM did have a couple of late chances to get on the score sheet. Anton Douglas forced a good save from the home stopper with a left-footed effort from just inside the box and Douglas inadvertently blocked a Peter Barkley strike V which looked destined for the net.

"It was disappointing, especially after the Eastbourne Town game," Potter said. "We put in a really good performance and went to Godalming confident, and despite the pitch it was disappointing. "
