THERE is no other way of dressing this result up. It was utter humiliation. Horsham YMCA were taken to the cleaners by a ruthless Leatherhead who inflicted the
Gorings Mead outfit’s worst ever defeat on Saturday with a scoreline reminiscent of a one sided youth football match.
YM conceded the opener after 20 seconds, and were a man idown and two goals adrift ten minutes later, heads dropped and manager Colin Jenkinson promised sweeping changes.
"You can tell players how to do this and do that, they don’t do it and five minutes into the game we are 2-0 down," he remarked.
"As a player I was never short of desire. If things are not going well you expect players to want to put it right. I just do not understand it. There were seven
or eight players out there who were trying to do their own thing.
"If you do what you are told and it goes wrong, you can then come back to the coach and say that’s exactly what you told us."
The heavy defeat started abysmally. Leatherhead kicked off and attacked down the right flank where Tom Hutchings’ shot flicked off Glen Woodburn, leaving Mark Fox wrongfooted in goal for the opener after 20 seconds.
Hutchings and Kev Terry combined for the second on five minutes - Hutchings easily beat right back Tommy Brewer, and his cross found Terry who had got across his man.
Brewer was given a rollicking for that, and replied with a crunching challenge on Hutchings five minutes later which earned him a straight red card.
The defender protested, but there was not a peep from his teammates. The third arrived on 22 minutes, Byron Napper’s clumsy challenge upended Liam Pestle
in the box and Greg Andrews made little fuss over the spot kick.

Leatherhead were picking their hosts apart at will and went 4-O up when Chris Boulter was afforded a free header from Andrews’ corner. That was it until after the
break, and YM even hit the bar with Joey Collewijn’s effort after neat work from Michael Amponsah.
But the rout resumed in the second half, and if not for some good saves from keeper Fox and a little help from the woodwork, it could have been 15. Left back Rob Hill hit the sixth, his speculative shot floated in from about 40 yards, Dan Dean headed in number eight when unmarked at a set piece and Jon Boswell diverted home Pestle’s scuffed shot for number eight.
The pick of the goals arrived when a long throw was flicked on to MacLeod and his rasping volley found the top corner.
With almost half an hour to play it was inevitable the Tanners would reach double figures. YM held out until the 74th minute, but when Fox spilled a bouncing shot, Boswell was first to pounce.
The humiliation was still not complete though, and Leatherhead’s final goal saw substitute Marc Elston curl home a nice finish following a neat left wing move.
YM’s next first team fixture is against Corinthian Casuals away on the 23rd October and even at this early stage in the season, the game could be seen as a relegation six-pointer.
YM (4-4-2): Fox; Brewer, Alosa (Mahadeo 45), Woodburn, West; Napper, Kirkwood, Barkley, O'NeiIl (Gordon 45); Amponsah, Collewijn.
