COLIN Jenkinson’s first competitive outing with his new look Horsham YMCA ended in a 3-1 defeat at much fancied Metropolitan Police on Saturday.
It was the visitors who took an early lead after 11 minutes with their first attack, Edmond Walker picked up a through ball and had all the time in the world to drive the
ball into the back of the net.
After that it was mostly one-way traffic towards the visitor’s goal. The Blues could and should have scored on several occasions but failed to find the target.
Craig Watkins and then Vernon Francis both had shots cleared off the Horsham YMCA goal line. Steve Sutherland, unmarked on the far side headed a long cross just
wide.
YM stopper Andrew Osei rode his luck at times and in addition made a number of brilliant saves as the visitors kept their noses in front going into the half time break.
The deserved equaliser came within a minute of the start of the second half when Blues striker Tyrone Smith volleyed home a Craig Brown cross.
On 53 minutes Smith should have scored again, this time from the penalty spot after an earlier foul on Blues striker Craig Watkins, but Andrew Osei made a great save.
Nine minutes later Craig Brown, after another long run crossed to Gary Drewett who drove home the second goal for the Police.
Not to be outdone James Field, playing out on the left fank went on an impressive run but finished with a gentle shot straight to the keeper.
Minutes later another shot this time from Field, fizzed in at goal but Osei palmed the ball off the line with a great diving save.
It was game over on 72 minutes when home captain Steve Sutherland forced home goal number three.
Horsham YMCA may have been down but were far from out of it and somehow in the closing minutes much to their credit, mounted a counter attack and forced a corner
Jenson Grant got his heat to the ball but his effort was lust over the bar as YM opened their new season with defeat.
