A LAPSE of concentration cost Horsham YMCA the points in Saturdays 2-2 draw at Dulwich Hamlet.
YM led through Terry Dodd’s 11th league goal of the season and an 82nd minute Luke Gelling free kick, but Dulwich substitute Frankie Sawyer latched on to a ball over the top and finished well to earn the ten man hosts a draw.
Manager Chris White conceded the result was about right after a pretty scrappy game, and vowed to stick by his defensive unit.
He remarked: "I think that was a fair scoreline. I was disappointed we went to sleep for the second goal when we wanted to see the game out, we have spoken about it a lot, you are at your most vulnerable when you are attacking and the defence is not concentrating fully. But they are young lads and these are things we can work on during the summer."
A drying surface and a stiff breeze made ball control a bit of a lottery, it wasn’t much of a spectacle between two sides who have little to play for apart from pride.
When they got the ball down, Dulwich played the fancier stuff, neat triangles and quick feet led to the first chance of the day falling to Gerry Gonnella, who shot straight
at Tony Di Bernardo. The visitors’ found the most joy down the left through Tom Lawley - he lifted a shot well over and then Tony Timms couldn’t make clean contact with a far post header after a well worked free kick.
Dulwich’s touch looked more assured in the final third, and when Gonnella flicked a long ball into youngster Nyren Clunis’ path, the finish for the opening goal was unerring. Lawley remained YM’s out ball, and his teasing run drew a good 29th minute save from Dulwich keeper Phil Wilson.
The winger was instrumental in YM’s equaliser, his pass fed Tom Manton, who squared for Dodd and although the ball was a little behind the young striker, his produced a tidy finish.
Playing into the breeze in the second half, YM struggled to get out of their half for long periods - Gavin Geddes replaced Dodd, who had a groin problem, and found himself dropping deeper and deeper to find some action.
Again, it was Lawley who had their best chance, a snap shot which was blocked on the line. That said, Dulwich created little. Di Bernardo created YM’s
biggest scare when he fluffed a clearance, and it looked to be meandering. Gedling had other ideas though, and released by Geddes, his scampering run
was brought to a halt by Nicolas Plumain’s nudge on the edge of the box.
Plumain somewhat harshly saw red, and Gedling doubled the punishment by tiring the free kick low into the corner, via a ilick off the wall.
The introduction of Sawyer gave Hamlet renewed impetus and when his darting run was picked out by a long ball, he lifted a cool lob over the on
rushing Di Bernardo.
YM were almost caught again in similar circumstances in stoppage time, but Justin Bowen put his effort wide before Geddes shot agonisingly past the post for the visitors.
Star man: Neil Watts - The skipper is Mr Consistency at right back.
Magic moment: Any one ot Tom Lawley’s bursts ol pace which had Dulwich right back Corriston Campbell trailing in his wake.
YM (4-2-3-1): Di Bernardo; Watts, R Timms, T Timms, Brake; Huckett, Gedling;Westcott, Lawley, Manton (Pulling 71);Dodd (Geddes 52).
