AFTER SHIPPING eight goals in two straight defeats, three points and a clean sheet was the perfect tonic for Horsham YMCA at Gorings Mead on Tuesday night.

Against a physical Walton Casuals side scrapping it out at the bottom of the league it was never likely to be a classic, and so it proved as YM in the end were left to hang onto a narrow win which their endeavour over the 90 minutes deserved.

The Ryman South games continue to come thick and fast for Chris White’s men, with YM due to host Metropolitan Police last night before entertaining Merstham on Saturday, So Tuesday’s win, courtesy of John Westcott’s second half close range finish was enough to put the smile back on the manager’s face.

White said: "I thought we played some decent stuff, especially in the first half, and then when we went in front we got a little bit nervous because we’ve been two goals ahead (in the last game) and panicked a bit!"

"But I’ll give them thatr because the clean sheet was important as was the three points."

Casuals stuck ten men behind the ball from the off and YM struggled to penetrate them early on. Striker Terry Dodd had a penalty shout waved away and Matt Geard forced a close range save from visiting keeper Chico Ramos while Nigel Brake fired just wide from the edge of the box.

Casuals did pose the hosts some problems on the break but the returning Martyn Flack was a rock at the heart of defence, winning everything in the air.

The goal arrived midway through the second half. The impressive Brake surged up the left wing and on the second attempt his cross was steered towards goal by Dodd for Westcott to prod home at the far post.
