MISSED chances cost Horsham YMCA as they went down 3-0 at local rivals Worthing on Tuesday night.
YM had Steve Metcalf sent off for handballing on the line in the 54th minute and Evan Archibald put the Rebels
ahead from the penalty spot.
Having not been at the races until that moment the dismissal galvanised Horsham, and they had the chance to
level from the spot by against his former club Terry Dodd’s penalty was saved and Chamal Fenelon scored twice in injury
time for the hosts to put a gloss on the score.
YM manager Chris White, watching in the stands having started the first of a two-game touchline ban had no complaints with Metalf's sending
off but was furious that the referee did not hand out the same punishment to Worthing keeper Alan Mansfield. His foul on Dodd only earned his a
booking and the stopper saved the resulting penalty and pulled off some line saves as YM pressed thereafter.
He said: "It was a joke. I said to the ref after the game if you send one off at one end then you have to send the other one off. His explanation was that
Terry was going away from goal but there was no one else around him, it was ridiculous.
“And I don’t know why Terry took the penalty. Mike Huckett has scored the last three penalties but I think against his old club he got a bit
too excited. If I had been on the touchline there’s no way he would have taken it."
After YM had half-hearted penalty shouts for a handball against Richard Greenfield on 47 minutes, Worthing got the lead and a man advantage nine
minutes into the second half.
Paul Kennett’s drive was deflected onto the bar, and Evan Archibald’s follow-up header was handled on the line by defender Metcalf. Former Rebels
stopper Tony Di Bernardo got a hand to Archibald’s penalty but it found the net.
YM’s penalty was awarded after Tom Manton’s skilful run saw him pass to Dodd who was fouled by Mansfield. Neil Watts had a late volley saved
by Mansfield and Nigel Brake glanced a header wide before journeyman substitute Fenelon scored two in the space of 60 seconds to give the scoreline a flattering look.
YM: Di Bernardo; Watts, Flack, Metcalf, Brake; Lawley, Huckell, Gedling, Manton; Dodd, Geard. Subs: Pulling (Lawley 57), Geddps (Flack 80), Westcott, Shaw, Virgo.
