HORSHAM YMCA have made a bit of name for themselves in the past six weeks, as a free scoring unit.
So, to tough it out with ten men and come away from Walton & Hersham with a 2-1 win on Tuesday night displayed
another string to their bow. YM went 1-0 down immediately after Tony Timms was dismissed for a professional
foul, but struck back through Tom Lawley’s rocket and a goal for the ever willing Terry Dodd.
True, both sides ended up with ten on the pitch, but the damage was done by the time Elliott Brathwaite stamped on
Dodd for his marching orders, It caps a miserbale run of 1 point from 15 for Walton, while YM now find themselves
in tenth.
Manager Chris White declared: "That was probably the best of recent games, the character and the will to win,
I thought it was fantastic. We defended superbly with ten men and I am very proud to be their manager tonight."
Dodd was irrepessible all night, and is proving to be one of the signings of the season after being plucked County
League Division 2. He had three very presentable chances in the first 20 minutes, while at the other end the towering
Will Jenkins had Walton’s only chance of note, his downward header forced a good save from Tony Di Bernardo.
But despite lightning quick breakaways and further chances for Matt Geard and Luke Gedling, it was the hosts
who scored first. Timms had to go in the 43rd minute for - wrestling Jerson Dos Santos to the floor, and Ryan Lake
curled home the resulting free kick.
YM’s response was immediate, and in first half stoppage time, Lawley collected the ball on the corner ofthe box, drove
inside and unleashed an arrow of a shot to equalise.
After the break, YM were the better side, organisation and concentration thwarted John Crumplin’s Swans and once the
pressure waned on the hour mark they started to create chances again on the break. First Gedling scuffed one wide after
good work from Dodd, before the midfielder burst through a square back line and fed Dodd who had the simple task of tapping into an
empty net.
Unbridled joy from the YM bench, a stony face from the under pressure Crumplin. The expected backlash from the home side never really
materialised, though Craig Dunne did hit the outside of the post with a half volley.
Brathwaite’s straight red for stamping on Dodd after a reckless lunge summed Walton up as YM used the nous of John Westcott and Mark Pulling to .
close it out.
Man of the match: Terry Dodd was isolated, but made the ball stick and ploughed an impressive lone furrow.
Magic moment: The winner was textbook counter attacking football.
YM (4-2-2-1-1): Di Bernardo; Watts, Timms, Metcalf, Brake; Lawley (Westcott 78), Gedling, Hucketl, Manton; Geard (Cooke 43); Dodd (Pulling 88)
