MANAGER Chris White blamed missed chances for his Horsham YMCA side's defeat 3-2 to Worthing United in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday night (November 3).

YMCA, who dominated for long periods, took the lead through a first half strike by Tom Manton but failed to capitalise on several good opportunities to get a clear lead.

Worthing equalised through a Ryan Woodfood strike on 75 minutes before taking the lead in extra time courtesy of a Glen Woodburn header. Luke Gelding gave the home side hope with a cool right footed finish but the win was wrapped up for Worthing when YMCA failed to defend another corner, which was converted by the head of Stuart Axten.

Manager Chris White said: "The football we played excellent. It was probably as well as we've played all season but we came up short in both boxes.

"We could have been 3-0 up at half-time but we couldn't finish and take our chances. We failed to defend three set pieces which is the story of our season."

The home side will count themselves unlucky in a thrilling cup tie in which they had several opportunities to see the game off.

Midfielder Gavin Geddes had the best chance to give YMCA the lead after going through on goal he chipped the ball over the bar when a shot looked the more likely option.

After going a goal up through Manton, their lead could have been doubled in the second half when another ball in from the right by Huckett was knocked over the bar by striker Gavin Geddes.

The misses came to haunt them when Woodfood latched onto a loose ball from a corner and drilled home past Tom Rand.

From then on Worthing had the impetus and two more headed goals by Woodburn and Axten made sure of the win.

White added: "The performance was good and it was a good game of football."
