A BITTERLY disappointed Horsham YMCA left it too late to turn on the style in a 2-1 defeat at Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday.

Encouraged by their performance in a 1-1 draw with Sittingbourne, this was not the display manager Chris White expected, or wanted. On a pitch as flat and green as a snooker table it should have been a showcase of talent, but misplaced passes and heavy first touches blighted their game. Glenn Boosey and Wayne Finney scored the goals to put Casuals in the ascendancy, before Tom Lawley's consolation 13 minutes from time.

White said: "I thought we had turned the corner after Saturday. We keep starting to play when we are 2-0 down.

There are only so many times you can tell the defence how you want them to defend before you make changes."

New capture Gavin Geddes, signed from Burgess Hill Town, sat the game out as YM could not be certain all the paperwork was completed in time.

Geddes was a major inspiration as the Hillians beat the drop last season, and White is pinning his hopes on the former Brighton, Crawley, Worthing and Horsham man turning around YM's fortunes.

"Gavin is what we are looking for," White remarked.

"He has got a very good goal scoring record, and was pretty much responsible for keeping Burgess Hill up last season.

"When I have managed teams against him in the past in the County League, he was always about the best striker in the league and will be an asset for us."

And how they could have done with someone with his scoring record early on - it could easily have been 3-3 at the break. Casuals posed the bigger threat, and went into a deserved lead when Wes Harrison was allowed to find space on the right and pick out Glenn Boosey who turned and curled home a sumptuous finish from 18 yards.

YM were struggling to create opportunities now, and when they came along, getting bodies into the box was a major problem.

In the second half, Tom Rand was called into a number of saves of varying degrees of difficulty before YM buckled again on 67 minutes. Steve Metcalf tripped his man and Finney headed Ogbaufe's delivery back across goal into the far corner.

Lawley offered hope 13 minutes from time. Gedling rose well to head Tom Graves' diagonal ball, and the converted winger's pace took him clear of the defence before beating Matt Mann.

Meanwhile, coach Terry Graves has left the club, White cited a difference of styles.

YMCA: (4-4-2):Rand; Metcalf, Graves (Bennetts 82), Cooney, Brake; Westcott, Huckett, Watts (Sergeant 60), Gedling; Manton (Sadough 56), Lawley.
