ALL hopes of an FA Cup upset were scuppered in a poor first half as Horsham YMCA meekly slipped out of the competition.
Ryman Premier Division side Tonbridge Angels just proved too good, with former Horsham striker Carl Rook bagging a brace in Saturday's 4-0 victory.
YM had hoped to give a good account of themselves after scouting missions to Kent, but were undone after manager Chris White's warnings went unheeded.
He remarked: "We just didn't play, it took us going 3-0 down again, and they got a bit of a verbal going over at half time. We had four or five really good chances in the second half but by then Tonbridge had taken their foot off the gas a little. The match was done in the first half an hour.
"As the old saying goes, you can bring the horse to water...."
White had a scouting report and watched Tonbridge himself the previous week and set out his game plan to take care of the Angels at set plays and how they might hurt the hosts.
So to go behind to a set piece 15 minutes in was particularly displeasing. Rook flicked on a long throw, and Paul Booth arrived unmarked to head over Tom Rand.
White said: "I warned the players about set pieces and what they could do. I was not happy about that at all."
Tonbridge went further ahead thanks to YM's haste in clearing their box after a free kick had been repelled - that left Lee Minshull wide open to swivel and hit a half volley past Rand.
And it went from bad to worse before the break when Steve Sargent was ruled to have pushed his man in the box, and Rook stepped up to slot the third from the spot.
YM did improve after the break, striker Shaheen Sadough might have done better with three opportunities, and Steve Metcalf went close twice.
"It's a problem that we are not taking our chances," White commented. "By the time they got the fourth we might have been back in it."
Tonbridge wrapped up progress to the third qualifying round with Rook's second as he beat Tom Graves to a low ball
