"WE GOT what we deserved," was Horsham YMCA boss Chris White's assessment after watching his side crash out of the Charity Cup 2-1 at the hands of Shoreham.
YM found themselves two down in 20 minutes after Liam O'Brien struck twice in five minutes, and despite Tony Timms pulling one back before half time the fight back failed to materi¬alise in the second half.
To make matters worse Ben Harwood was stretchered off after break¬ing his collarbone in the sec¬ond half, and Ryan Bradley joined him on the already overflowing treatment table by injuring his troublesome ankle.
"We weren't very good and over the course of the 90 minutes probably got what we deserved," he said.
YM made the brighter start to the game but on 15 minutes the visitors stunned them by scoring with their first meaningful attack.
YM allowed a cross to come in and big centre forward O'Brien out jumped Timms and Paul Williams to head in.
Five minutes later and another mistake allowed O'Brien to double Shoreham's lead. This time James Virgo gave the ball away in midfield.
White replaced Jack Hayward with Harwood and pushed Steve Metcalf into midfield, the move paid off as YM worked a way back into the game.
On 31 minutes Harwood's dangerous corner was met by the head of Timms and it was game on.
But Harwood left the field on 60 minutes and YM's comeback hopes fizzled out in a limp second half, but with a minute to go Kevin Budge should have forced extra time, mis-controlling inside the box.
White added: "You can fill the injury gaps for a while, but eventually they catch up with you."
YMCA: (4-4-2): Rand, Williams, Timms, Virgo, Metcalf; Lawley, Carter, Haywood (Harwood 20, Georgiou 60), Joseph; Bradley (Budge 45), Sadough.
