A DEPLETED Horsham YMCA were always going to struggle against second placed Cray Wanderers, and so it proved as they were beaten convincingly 5-0.

The visitors found themselves behind after just four minutes and failed to seriously trouble the hosts from then on, and the result sees them relegated from the Ryman Division 1 South after two seasons.

Wanderers were unbeaten in 27 matches going into Saturday's game while YM hadn't won in six and were without several first team regulars including Matt Russell (gashed leg), Tom White (hamstring) and James Grant (groin).

Horsham found themselves one down inside five minutes following some non existent marking, a free kick came in from the left and found George Fenwick unchallenged to head in.

Minutes later YM had a half chance, a free kick finding Martyn Flack but his weak shot was straight at the keeper, before Dane Palmer saved from Lewis Wood when the Wanderers striker really should have scored.

Greg Palmer was typically battling for everything upfront alongside the pace of Richard Greenfield, but the pair were being well marshalled by a strong defence as Cray ventured forward.

The home side were a little over zealous in their efforts to find the killer ball and were constantly caught offside in the first half as chances were limited.

Greenfield laid the ball into Palmer's path but his shot was wide before the pair combined for YM's best chance, Palmer doing well down the left to cross for Greenfield, but his snatched shot cleared the bar.

The move of the match saw Wanderers double their lead, Ross Lover opened up the defence on the right and cut the ball back for Jamie Kempster to finish, and only a brilliant save from Palmer kept it at two at half time.

There was no way back for YM after the second goal, yet they started the second half brightly and began to move the ball around in the middle, captain Tom Wood with a shot which was blocked.

Their effort was epitomised by Dean Garden playing on the right wing, and some assured defending by Glen Woodburn at the back, but just as they had steadied the ship they conceded again, the ball fell to Dean Morris to guide home with Palmer rooted to the spot.

Adam Jupp came on upfront and was partnered by Flack, but it was all Cray from then on as Woodburn headed off the line in a flurry of attacks.

Cray's defender Ryan Royston helped himself to two headed goals from a free kick and a corner to complete the scoring and leave YM manager John Suter to concede the best team had won.

"The difference between second from top and second from bottom was there for all to see," he"

"They were beliMjian us, we didn't do enough i penalty area, didn't defend well in ours and didn't create much in theirs.

"We were not good enough at the end of the day."

Man of the Match: : : Glen Woodburn - Some assured defending, last ditch tackles and a header off the line kept the score down.

Magic Moment: A lovely run down the left by Greg Palmer who picked out the waiting Richard Greenfield to put over from seven yards.
