FOR Horsham YMCA to win any points at league leaders Dover, it was going to take something special, so when their brave effort came up marginally short on Monday night it was heart-breaking for John Suter's men.

Frannie Collin scrambled in a 90th minute winner for the hosts after Dover had laid siege to the YM goal in the closing stages. The word plucky could have been coined for this YM performance, not only did they frustrate, Dover for 89 minutes - thanks in large to some superb Chris Winterton saves - but had opportunities to snatch a goal in an open first period.

YM manager Suter commented: "Dover were always the better footballing side, but we matched their skill with just getting in the way and sticking to our task.

"They didn't ever really break us down, when you think we had three one on one chances in the first half we defended better than them. But the longer the game went on, the more you worry in the back of your mind that they are going to score."

From the first whistle, Dover's movement and sharp passing threatened to overwhelm the visitors, but YM, well marshalled by Tom White, weathered the first of many storms.

The fact they were able to remain in the game for long owed much to Winterton, who was called into action to make a full length stop from Craig Cloke, who proved a constant menace, and later in the half he denied Alan Pouton and Cloke twice again.

But Dover were not going to have it all their own way, Andy Ottley was making a nuisance of himself and in the llth minute his trickery carved out the first scare. After skipping past John Keister, Ottley fired in a low drive which John Whitehouse did well to turn away. A minute later Ottley opened up a chance for James Grant, but his finish under pressure from a defender lacked conviction.,

And later in the half Greenfield flashed a shot wide when he collected a loose ball.

In the second period, the back four were working overtime, last ditch tackles and desperate clearances to touch were the norm as the half wore on. Winterton was the hero again with a top class save at his near post to deny Collin who had been picked out unmarked. But finally the pressure told.

Piling men forward for set piece after set piece, finally Cloke rose highest inside the box and although his header was partially blocked, the ball fell for Collin who lashed home the last gasp winner.

Man of the Match: Chris Winterton - deserves a clean sheet one day soon.

Magic Moment: Winterton's stop from Collin. with 15 minutes left looked like it might secure a point.
