BRAVE Horsham YMCA were unlucky to lose 4-2 after extra time at Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday evening.

They were unable to repeat their heroics of the previous round where they beat F61kestone Invicta, and were sent crashing out of the Isthmian League Cup third round.

YM matched their Premier Division opponents despite falling behind to a Kirk Watts goal with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Hamid Barr rallied the Angels into a two goal lead midway through the second half but YM responded instantly through James Grant before substitute Adam Jupp fired them level with virtually the last kick of the game.

Barr regained the lead for the hosts after four minutes of extra time and James Donovan was lucky to escape with a yellow card when he scythed^down Andy Ottley when through on goal.

Young Charlie Sharman came off the bench to net his first senior goal for Tonbridge in the 115th minute to give them a flatter¬ing scoreline.

Manager John Suter said: "I thought the performance was good, the effort was phe¬nomenal, our team spirit and commitment was good.

"The defence played ever so well, we created goalscor-ing opportunities, we didn't take them all but we were always in the game.

"They kept the ball ever so well, and if only we could add that to our game we would be a much better side and get better results.

"We've played well now for a couple of games but lost. them both," rued the boss.

"But I'm heartened by the fact that we played up to 90 minutes and we got a draw."

The game started at a live¬ly pace with Barr thumping the-woodwork for the hosts and Ottley testing Matt Reed on a couple of occasions, the second saw Tom Lyons' shot blocked from the rebound when he could have scored as well.

Richard Harris had a shot well blocked by Dean Garden and an unmarked John Beales headed wide as the Angels began to get on top.

The goal duly arrived in the 40th minute when Fraser Logan did well to get to the byline and pick out Watts to coolly volley into the bottom corner.

Tonbridge had a lot of pos¬session after the interval before YM battled back with Ottley fizzing an effort just off target and midfield dynamo Matt Simpson was denied by the keeper.

A short back pass from Beales was charged down by Greg Palmer and Reed's attempted clearance hit the YM striker and went frac¬tionally over.

A snap shot from Jupp was well held by Reed before Tonbridge doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute when Watts squared the ball for Barr to lash it into the top corner.

YM did not lie down though and hit back a minute later when a rocket from Grant flew past a helpless Reed.

The visitors then pressed for an equaliser which came in the 92nd minute when Jupp latched on to a poor clearance and buried it in the bottom corner.

Barr got clear early in the extra period and slid the ball under Ken Westoby but Ottley nearly responded again when his 25-yarder was well saved.

The YM man was then set free, brought down from behind by Donovan and the referee, Mr D Buck, adjudged that it wasn't a clear goalscoring opportuni¬ty, but the full back would have done very well to have made a covering tackle.

Suter's side was caught on the break as they pushed for an equaliser and Sharman chipped Westoby to make it 4-2.

The manager remarked: "There were a lot of good performances out there and it is a shame we didn't get any¬thing out of it, not even a penalty shootout.

"You can take positives out of the game but we've got to turn performances into draws and wins. It frustrates me that we can't do that at the moment." YM

Man of the Match: Andy Ottley - had the quality to threaten Tonbridge all evening.

Magic Moment: Adam Jupp's goalscoring return for YM.
