A STRONG Dulwich Hamlet side had too much for Horsham YMCA as they won 2-1 at Gorings Mead on Saturday.
YM took an early lead after James Grant was pulled down in the box and Matt Simpson converted from the spot.
The hosts could have added to their first half lead but despite Tom Lyons' prompting and probing, they failed to do so.
Dulwich came out fired up for the second half and Shayne Mangodza equalised before the dangerous Shawn Beveney - who has had trials at league clubs - struck the winner.
Manager John Suter said: "They deserved to win it, they put us under a lot more pressure in the second half but we were unfortunate not to get more in the first half.
"I thought they were a good side with plenty of pace but we've more than matched them first half. We were as good as them, if not having the edge. Shawn Beveney is a very good player."
YM went in front after five minutes when Grant's shirt was pulled back by Steve May and the referee, Wes Linden, pointed to the spot.
Simpson stepped up and beat Sheikh Ceesay.
Dulwich were almost level within minutes when Marc Cumberbatch headed Seb Schoburgh's corner on to the bar.
That was a warning for YM as the Hamlet proved to be a menace all afternoon from set pieces especially corners.
Beveney then raced away, only to be thwarted by a great last ditch tackle by Matt Russell.
But YM looked dangerous as well as they penetrated regularly down the wings but crucially were unable to provide the finishing touch to double their advantage.
Recent signing, Tom Lyons had to go off with a hamstring injury which was a blow to Suter's men as he was showing glimpses of what he could do.
The visitors came out after the break a better side and were level in the 52nd minute when Mangodza lashed home a low corner.
Joe Keehan was unable to get a shot away when well placed and YM went agonisingly close again when Richard Greenfield beat three people before sliding the ball across goal where no-one could apply the finish.
Dulwich went in front in the 68th minute when Simpson headed Schoburgh's corner half clear, the ball fell to Beveney who made a half a yard of space before blasting the ball past Ken Westoby - who was back in the net for the injured Chris Winterton.
Dulwich wracked up the corner count and Beveney and Stanley Muguo went close to adding to the lead but Westoby kept them at bay and YM couldn't get back into the game.
