A GULF in class was too much for Horsham YMCA to bridge in Tuesday night's FA Cup First Qualifying Round replay loss to Folkestone Invicta.
Manager John Suter conceded his side had probably missed their chance to progress in the competition when they were held 1-1 by the Ryman Premier Division club at the weekend.
And on Tuesday, YM were barely given an opportunity to build on that by a well organised Invicta outfit in a 2-0 loss.
Michael Everitt and Mark Saunders netted goals ten minutes apart in the first half, and if it wasn't for keeper Chris May producing heroics in the second period it could have been many more.
Suter commented: "The scoreline didn't reflect the game, it could have been a lot more.
"In some ways it's better to lose a game comprehensively - we know all the reasons why we lost. The opposition did a lot better job. Chris May made the score-line respectable.
"We lacked in a lot of things, we didn't keep the ball as well as them and it's difficult when both sides are passing to the same team."
It took a while for both sides to warm up and for long periods YM took to playing million dollar long balls while Folkestone tried to turn the home defence by going over the top.
May was forced into a stop at his near post when early substitute Damian Abel was picked out in acres of space and Glen Woodburn was doing a lot of firefighting as the half wore on, repelling Folkestone's thrusts.
The visitors found a way through just after the half hour. YM half cleared a corner, but James Everitt switched the play to pick out Saunders unmarked in the left back position, his pass inside was met by Michael Everitt whose shot nestled in the net.
Michael Everitt was provider again as his corner was met at full stretch by Saunders' header, who in truth should not have been allowed the space he was inside the box.
With his side 2-0 down, Suter's half time pep talk must have still been ringing in their ears as they made an enthusiastic start to the second period.
On 52 minutes, Adam Jupp, making his first appearance of the season in the first team, was sent racing through by Steve Davies when the striker held off his man, but Jupp had too long to weigh up his options and keeper Kieran Mann was able to turn his shot round the post.
At the other end, May produced a good reaction stop to deny Roland Edge, and James Everitt headed over' when Abel made a scintillating breakaway run and cross.
May was also called into action to make a good double, save from James Everitt andv Edge.
Slowly the hosts began to make some of their own running - an Andy Ottley free kick clipped the top of Mann's crossbar and Woodburn headed an Ottley corner over before Mithun Nayee dug the ball out of his feet to fire in a shot which was tipped behind. Suter added: "I make so secret that I would have loved to win and have a cup run, but the league is the thing, we want to make sure we have enough points to stay in it." YM (4-4-2): May; Duffield (Percival 65), Woodburn, Russell, Ottley; Garden, White, Keehan (Carter 73), Taylor; Davies, Jupp (Nayee 65).
YM (4-4-2): May; Duffield (Percival 65), Woodburn, Russell, Ottley; Garden, White, Keehan (Carter 73), Taylor; Davies, Jupp (Nayee 65).
Man of the match: Chris May - would have been many more if not for his saves.
Magic moment: Andy Ottley's free kick which grazed the bar was a rare moment of YM threat.
