A GLORIOUS chance for Horsham YMCA to progress into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup went begging with almost the final kick of the game against Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.
Dan Taylor's last minute opportunity was cleared off the line in the 1-1 draw, and manager John Suter admits it could have been his side's best chance of seeing off their Ryman Premier Division opposition.
Joe Keehan had given YM the lead shortly before the break, but that was cancelled out by Mark Saunders' header ten minutes from time and although both sides had golden opportunities to score the winner late on, Taylor's was the pick of them.
"We could have come away with a win," Suter said.
"Whether that was fair or not I don't know, I fear we have had our chance now and that's what happens when you play against a side in a division above yours."
The hosts started brightly, and Leigh Bremner conjured up the first chance when his cross was met by Saunders' diving header which flew straight- at Chris May in the YM goal.
Folkestone had started at 'lOO Miles per hour' and the Gorings Mead outfit did well to weather their early storm, until they worked an opening for striker Steve Davies.
Tom White released the target man who exchanged passes with Michael Death before putting an effort narrowly wide under intense pressure from the Invicta goalkeeper.
May was called into action at the other end shortly afterwards - racing out to block Michael Everitt's shot as he burst through the middle.
The YM keeper then tipped a James Everitt header over the bar as the chances continued to flow. But it was YM who drew first blood - Keehan met White's cross with a looping header which beat the keeper at the far post.
The end to end football continued after the break. The busy Andy Ottley went on a mazy dribble and shot which just cleared the angle of post and crossbar.
Folkestone hit back and when Matt Russell eave away a 65th minute penalty, it appeared YM's lead would be cancelled out. But Kevin Watson stepped up only to see his spot kick clear the crossbar.
The reprieve didn't last long though as when Dean Garden lost a long ball in the sun, Folkestone substitute Ben Sly raced away down the left channel and crossed for Saunders to score with a header.
Invicta then missed a great chance of their own to win it - everyone left a seemingly goalbound shot to nestle in the corner, but once it became apparent it wasn't force the ball over the line proved fruitless.
Then, in the dying seconds Davies galloped onto a ball from White - he looked offside but the flag stayed down - after drawing the keeper he f squared for Taylor who it just seemed he only had to make contact to score from six yards. But the shot hit a defender who made a desperate block on the line to deny YM and their chance of victory was gone.
