BATTLING Horsham YMCA were out-gunned and went down 1-0 at Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday evening.
Like the first game of the season YM matched their opponents in the first half but lacked the cutting edge that the Hamlet had.
The hosts netted the only goal of the game midway through the first half when Daniel Morris fired home.
As the second half wore on Dulwich looked more threatening on the break with their electrifying pace up front and they should have added to their lead but YM stood firm, however they couldn't find an equaliser.
Manager John Suter said: "For effort and commitment we couldn't have been faulted.
"I thought we worked very hard and that they were a very good side, very quick, good footballers, it could have been more than 1-0.
"I felt against Dover 5-1 flattered them but last (Tuesday) night, 1-0 flattered us.
"They were the side with more pace and they closed us down quickly but we stuck at it manfully."
Dulwich's cosmopolitan side added steel to the flowing football from last year but it was the visitors who started better and had the first good chance.
From the right wing Matt Russell crossed for the unmarked Steve Davies who firmly headed wide.
It took Dulwich until the 24th minute to actually have a shot due to their tendency to over-play but it was off target from Morris. A back pass to Chris May was charged down by Stanley Muguo and it went out for a corner that was half cleared. When it came back in three or four players were offside but not Morris, who drilled it under May to give the hosts a 26th minute lead.
YM pressed but were getting little change out of Steve Aris and Shayne Mangodza in particular.
Just before the break May rushed out and was beaten to the ball by Morris but it went wide of the upright.
Benson Paka raced clear and whipped in a cracking ball that just evaded everyone in the YM box.
The visitors then had a couple of half chances, a quick throw from Russell to Joe Keehan saw him strike at goal but Chuck Martini gathered at the second attempt.
The keeper then gave the ball away but Keehan crossed just too high for Davies, a couple of inches lower and he would have had a simple header.
But YM looked vulnerable on the break, Glen Woodburn and Dean Garden made tremendous challenges but no-one could stop Phil Williams racing away when Matt Duffield was dispossessed, however, May made a fine block.
Martini caught the ball from a corner and released Shawn Beveney who ran over half the length of the pitch, leaving YM defenders for dead but he dragged his shot wide.
At the other end Russell flicked the ball wide when Keehan, coming in, was better placed to go for the header from Garden's delivery.
Anton Innocent, Williams and Morris all threatened with their pace but the game ended 1-0 to the hosts.
YM (4-4-2): May; Garden, Joyce, Woodburn, Ottley; Duffield (Kazemi 76), White, Keehan, Taylor (Keaney 80); Davies, Russell (Simpson 80).
Man of the match: Dean Garden - defended manfully against genuine pace.
Magic moment: A fine last ditch tackle by Garden on Williams to keep YM in the hunt.
