It was the first Ryman League double that the Gorings Mead outfit had completed to the delight of manager John Suter.

The hosts started strongly but missed chances before Eddie Achoko blasted YM in front after 20 minutes.

That settled the visitors down and a thumping header from Glen Woodburn doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time.

Neither side threatened much after the break as YM comfortably held on for the victory on a surface that was far from conducive to playing passing football.

Suter commented: "We were pleased with it, our first league double.

"We had some good performances, what I liked about it was the players adapted to playing on that pitch.

"We were a strong, committed team - it was a very good team performance.

"People worked hard, everybody played well but probably just with their noses in front were Matt Russell, Matt Duffield and Woody [Woodburn]."

The manager admitted: "It was one of those games that was never a great game but it didn't have to be great as far as we were concerned."

YM were slow out of the blocks and Suter said: "It's not untypical of us to start slowly."

The first 15 minutes belonged to Godalming and Dean Ruddy had to tip over a volley from Michael Ruffles before Scan Lydon missed from point blank range.

Achoko then cut inside and smashed the ball into the far top corner with his left foot from 20 yards as Andy Brooks could not keep it out despite getting his hand to it.

"That settled us down a little bit," remarked Suter.

The visitors went close on a couple of occasions with Duffield threatening down the right.

Scott Kirkwood and Pat Massaro were inches away from converting one of his crosses and Kirkwood volleyed off target from another Duffield delivery.

Just before half time Dean Garden's corner was met by a bullet header from Woodburn to make it 2-0.

The YM supremo said: "The pitch was dreadful, you couldn't knock the ball around on it so we played ugly in the second half."

YM did have one scare after the break when keeper Ruddy ventured out of his goal and lost the ball in the left back area, but the chance was missed as the ball ended up on the roof of the net.

"It was a scruffy second half, neither side threatened very much but we didn't have to, the onus was on them. We were happy with what we had," said Suter.
