HORSHAM YMCA suffered a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Dartford to send them spinning out of the FA Trophy, but boss John Suter praised his side's performance.
Despite conceding goals at regular intervals to a slick and clinical Dartford side, YM kept plugging away and went close to scoring on a number of occasions. The hosts' cutting edge, however, was too much for the Ryman League newcomers to handle.
Suter remarked: "I don't feel they were six goals better than us.
"We played some good football, it was just in between the boxes, and not in them. They were a lot more effective in the box."
Dartford's 4-3-3 formation was set up to attack, with Dave Martin causing mayhem - but it was a hat trick each for Ryan Hayes and Brendan Cass which sealed YM's FA Trophy fate.
Suter pointed to good performances from Dean Garden, Matt Ottley, Tom White and Scott Kirkwood, to cushion the blow of a six goal defeat.
"We were their equal for 19 minutes," he said.
Matt Russell almost gave YM the lead, but headed over when wide open from yards out, and Tom White had a long range shot scrambled round the post.
It was after 19 minutes that Dartford started the demolition job - Hayes swung a free kick from the right towards the far post, Eddie McClements jumped for it and that was enough for Jason Dumbrill to take his eyes off the ball as it sailed in.
Dartford's second was a well constructed goal, Brendan Cash played it to Hayes who tricked his way past Nick Levett before crossing for Cash, who continued his run, a good first touch allowed him to smash it past Dumbrill.
YM then conceded a disappointing third before half time, Martin's cross looped off Garden's boot and fell for Cash to head home unmarked from six yards.
A bad afternoon got worse at half time when Dumbrill, suffering from a thigh strain, was replaced by Mike Wood.
James Grant had a shot beaten away and White shot straight at the keeper as YM made a bright opening to the second period.
But all good things come to an end, and Cass made it four when he volleyed home a pin point cross.
Dartford's fifth was a goal to grace the Premiership, Steve Hassner passed to Hayes, who cut inside Nick Levett and curled a fine finish beyond Wood.
YM kept plugging away though, and Russell was unlucky not to score in a goal mouth scramble, before Cass added the home side's sixth.
He robbed the out of sorts Ellis Hooper, and tucked away his third goal at the second attempt.
"That is a dreadful score-line to look at," Suter mused.
"They were better than us, that's why they are second in the table.
"But I felt our performance was good - we tried to play football. We just didn't have the cutting edge they had."
YM (4-4-2): Dumbrill (Wood 45); Garden, M Ottley, Hooper, Levett; A Ottley, White, Kirkwood, Grant; Russell (Brackley 79), Davis (Greenfield 72).
