YM's Scott Kirkwood, impressed in central midfield, picture by Mick Burren, courtesy of the West Sussex County Times HISTORY was made as Horsham YMCA won their first ever FA Trophy game, beating Aveley 3-1 on Sunday.

Young Grant Miller and Scott Kirkwood gave the Gorings Mead side an early two goal lead but midway through the second half Martin Tuohy halved the deficit.

However Matt Russell clinically settled the game late on.

Manager John Suter said: "I was very pleased - our first ever Trophy game, a landmark in the club's history.

"It is our first time that we are good enough to be in the competition and to win it was the icing on the cake.

"It was an exciting game - end-to-end, goalscoring chances, goalmouth incidents."

In a move reminiscent of last week's goal at Corinthian Casuals, James Grant beat Craig Braham for pace and squared it for Miller to coolly finish in the sixth minute.

Minutes later Braham had YM going in the other direction as the defence backed off the full back and allowed him to run a long way before Jason Dumbrill palmed his shot round the post.

During an action packed start to the game, YM doubled the lead in the 14th minute.

Grant picked out Peter Brackley at the far post who cushioned the ball into Kirkwood's path and he did the rest.

Chances continued to flow as Shaun Reece's shot deflected to the dangerous Daniel Francis but his first time effort came off the top of the bar.

The hosts had a chance to bury the game in the first half when Miller slid the ball to Brackley but he fired a great chance over the top.

Kirkwood turned and shot over and at the other end Dumbrill was beaten to the ball by Francis but the lively winger headed wide.

YM received another let off when Tuohy glanced Braham's cross wide but they went close on the stroke of half time when Russell's header failed to hit the target.

Early in the second half, Miller nodded a fantastic cross from Dean Carden wide before Aveley beat an awful offside trap by YM. A gaping hole appeared in the centre of defence and Tuohy was allowed to run through before slotting past Dumbrill in the 65th minute.

Grant - who was was brilliant in the first half, making two goals and doing some fine defensive work - went missing after the interval and the YM strikers ran offside when they had the chance to break so their threat was not great.

However they rarely looked troubled at the other end, unless it was going to be a mistake that let their Ryman Division 1 North opponents back in.

That nearly arrived when Ellis Hooper went to play the ball off an attacker but it re-hounded back into the box I v fore he was bailed out of trouble and the danger was cleared.

The Aveley keeper, Marc Palmer, came close to an own goal when he punched a corner on to his own bar and Russell's shot was blocked.

YM did wrap the game up a minute into stoppage time when an excellent pass from Kirkwood sent Russell away | and he delightfully lifted the ball over Palmer when the keeper went to ground to set up a trip to Dan ford in Ihc firnl qualifying round on Sunday October 22.

Man of the Match: Scott Kirkwood - looked a threat from midfield, finishing off a fine move for number two.

Magic moment: Good defending at the end by Dean Carden, made the interception before bringing the ball clear, nut-megging Daniel Francis in the process and informing him of this.
YM (4-4-2): Dumbrill; Carden, Hooper, Woodburn, Levett; Brackley (Shoefield 67), White, Kirkwood, Grant; Miller (Greenfield 58), Russell.
