A FINE goalkeeping display from Jason Dumbrill ensured Horsham YMCA only lost 1-0 at home to Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday.
The hosts were overrun by their opponents but it took a very questionable penalty to inflict defeat and to add insult to injury Steve Best was red carded for the offence.
Dumbrill was eventually beaten by Chris Dickson from the spot in the 63rd minute and that is the way the game remained thanks to the brilliance of the keeper.
Manager John Suter com¬mented: "Dulwich are a super fit side. I was very impressed by their fitness levels - they were like greyhounds, very athletic. They were quick with the ball and they put us under tremendous pressure.
"They were very wasteful in front of goal though, and if Jason Dumbrill hadn't have played so well we could have lost by five or six.
"Only to lose 1-0, and on a harsh decision like that, it was ironic that all the good attack¬ing play they had that they won it like that.
"Kevin Keehan had a good game on Saturday but it says a lot about the game that Jason Dumbrill was man of the match," he added.
The visitors started at a lightening fast tempo, which they kept up all game but their finishing left a lot to be desired with Luke Cornwall, Dickson and Phil Williams all guilty of misses in the first quarter of an hour.
The YM stopper made a very good reaction save to thwart Dickson after Glen Woodburn's back header had put him in trouble.
Chances continued to flow for Dulwich and YM had their first opening midway through the half when Matt Russell and Dave Gellatly linked up but the striker failed to pick out Pat Massaro who was lurking dangerously.
Minutes later YM had a great chance, Massaro was put through on goal by a good pass from Russell but he could not beat James Pullen.
Dulwich broke quickly but the over worked YM defence kept them at bay thanks to a superbly timed tackle by Best.
Woodburn also made a great covering tackle and the hard working Keehan charged down a free-kick as the score was goalless at half-time.
After the break Russell flicked on for Keehan who jinked inside but his left foot curler was saved by the keep¬er.
Then came the harsh penal¬ty, Dumbrill saved from Williams, the ball fell to Dickson who crashed the ball against Best from a few yards out and Ben Knight pointed to the spot.
The defender was given his marching orders but showed where the ball had struck him as he departed and there was a red mark on his side.
Dickson put the penalty just out of Dumbrill's reach to give them the lead just after the hour.
The striker showed twinkle toes in the box but was denied by a fine stop and minutes later Dickson was in again but Dumbrill produced another flying save.
It was like a knife through butter at times as YM tired. Dickson lifted the ball through to Williams who blazed over and the stopper made the save of the day with 15 minutes to go.
David Moore slid Cornwall in but Dumbrill was at full length to tip the ball round the post for a corner.
The Gorings Mead side worked hard but were unable to salvage anything from the game.
Man of the match: Jason Dumbrill - an outstanding display between the sticks
Magic moment: A flying save by the keeper to deny Cornwall.
