John Suter's men were disappointed to be held by the second bottom side but that blow was cushioned by the fact that leaders Ringmer were beaten 4-0 by Sidley.

YM twice came from behind with goals by Dave Gellatly and Dean Garden against spirited opposition and they had their goalkeeper to thank as he twice thwarted the Rye forwards at the death when they broke clear.

"We were dejected to drop two points to a side that is second from bottom," said Suter. "But with Ringmer losing, it was a point gained. We were indebted to Chats [Chatfield] for getting one point.

"There is no rhyme or reason to the league this season, anyone who puts together a good, consistent run will do well," added the manager.

The visitors made a bright start and could have been ahead as early as the second minute, however Chris Gould was denied by the keeper when he burst through. by Rye, they were good and complacency," commented

"We were taken by surprise we started with an infusion of Suter

Following some good work by Garden and Trevor, Gellatly saw his shot well blocked but Rye were still first to everything and took the lead in the 17th minute. YM were knocking the ball around lethargically at the back and were caught out when Nick Levett was robbed and the cross was glanced in by John Bradley.

This kick started the hosts into action as they began to open up a stubborn defence. Matt Duffield crossed for Matt Russell who teed up Kris Trevor but he miscued his shot.

Gellatly blazed over and Garden's effort was blocked before sustained pressure resulted in Joel O'Hara's shot being saved.

Rye nearly doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when YM cheaply surrendered possession again as Glen Woodburn slipped on a tricky surface but they were able to avert the danger.

"We tried to play football in the wrong areas," remarked the YM boss.

A sweetly struck half-volley from Russell was well held by the keeper just after the interval and the striker did have the ball in the back of the net only to be denied by the assistant referee's flag minutes later.

The equaliser arrived on the hour mark when Duffield's half cleared cross found Russell who fed Gellatly and he cut inside before clinically finishing in the far corner.

However Rye retook the lead four minutes later when a short back pass from Woodburn put Chatfield in trouble, the keeper just got there first but his clearance fell to a blue shirt and Ben Codling despatched the ball.

YM hit back again in the 71st minute when Russell was flattened in the box. Garden stepped up to coolly slot home his ninth of the season and keep his 100 per cent record from the spot.

Woodburn nearly headed the Gorings Mead side into the lead for the first time but was denied by an instinctive save.

With YM going in search of a winner they were caught on the break as Tim Chenciy and Joe Cornwall both raced clear but Chatfield's heroics prevented defeat.
