YM SHOOK off their festive blues with a hard-working performance on Saturday against very strong opposition.

The pitch was hardly conducive to free flowing football, but the visitors put together some good moves and were worth the three points.

Crowborough had tall and physically strong defenders and some pace up front but only really threatened late on when they faced defeat and pushed more up front.

Most of the first half was stalemate and both sides had a couple of decent chances just off target.

Then, with 40 minutes gone, Ellis Hooper fed Matt Russell who beat the keeper, Kush Movaffagh, but appeared to be felled by him.

The referee pointed to the spot and booked Movaffagh. Strangley, though, as the home side remonstrated he chatted to his assistant and proceeded to change his mind, give Crowborough a free-kick and apparently, rescind the booking.

Ten minutes after the break, though, and YM skipper Matt Duffield gave his side the lead.

Some positive work down the left from Nick Levett led to a great cross. Russell had a shot well blocked but Duffield slotted home the rebound.

Four minutes later and the home side nearly levelled as Ross Treleaven's shot was saved by keeper lan Chatfield.

The ball then went to the other end and Duffield had another shot saved.

YM seemed to take control for 20 minutes and had a number of efforts on and off target.

In an attempt to grab something from the game, Crowborough pushed more men forward and, after 85 minutes the ball was cleared off the line and then blocked in a goalmouth scramble.

Into injury-time and a home free-kick caused more problems in the area before being I cleared.

However, with 94 minutes on the clock, a clearance from the YM area found Dave Gellatly in his own half and he sprinted into the opposition penalty area, had his first shot saved but then clipped the second home.

Manager John Suter was relieved to get through the match with a win. "It was a much more committed performance. Everything was better, we played with a better shape and worked harder. And the football took care of itself.

"They are a very strong side and 2-0 up here is a very good three points."
