HORSHAM YMCA's FA Vase hopes were buried in the mud at Chessington on Saturday.
The side's emphatic league title victory last season should have spurred them on to sucŽcess in the national competiŽtions.
But they failed badly in the FA Cup in September to a poor Croydon side and, on Saturday, hopes of success in the Vase also disappeared.
YM manager John Suter, who enjoys the thrill of these national competitions, was very downcast after the match.
Ten minutes after the game, he was still stood alone near the dugout trying to come to terms with, not just the result, but the way the team played.
Suter pointed out the poor state of the pitch but wasn't going to blame the result on that.
"We had a bad day at the office today," said Suter. "We had a lot of people who didn't play to their potential and we lacked adventure and creativity.
"We deserved all we got out of it - nothing.
"I am bitterly disappointed. We weren't good enough on the day and they're not a good side. I'm not being unkind to them, but they're not a great side. You could tell by their reaction at the end - it was as if they had won the competiŽtion itself," added the veteran boss.
Chessington are mid-table in the Combined Counties League and their manager conŽfessed before the game his team would have to play very well to get anything out of the tie.
Instead, they played reasonŽably, but YM played poorly.
The pitch was boggy and the grass long, which meant severŽal shots on both sides lost their impetus by the time they reached the keeper.
However, plenty of others were fired high, wide and not very handsome.
The home side had an early switch, bringing on Andre Brown up front who was far livelier and seemed to have more space than he should have.
YM's best first half chance came after 26 minutes from full-back Dean Garden, who ran from defence, linked well with Kris Trevor, got into the box and fired his shot about 20 feet over the bar.
The figures speak for themŽselves in the first half for YM -no shots on target, four off tarŽget and no corners.
It needed a bit of brilliance to kick-start the game - instead we got a defensive lapse.
Aly Heath set the move off for Chessington after 53 minŽutes and Darren Smith linked with Robbie Burns who seemed to have an age to set himself up in the penalty area without being tackled before drilling past keeper lan Chatfield's right hand.
The rest of the half, until the last five minutes, was frantic and had little football and even YM's three subs were unable to alter things.
In the dying minutes, howŽever, two good YM crosses to the near post saw flick headers from Matt Duffield and Glen Woodburn saved.
But it was all too little too late.
Team: (4-4-2): Chatfield; Garden, Hooper (Weekes 75), Woodburn, Carter; Duffield, Westgate, Eldridge, Grant; Russell (O'Carroll 88), Trevor (Plumridge 78).
