KRIS Trevor scored his third goal in as many games to took YM a place in the pre-liminary round of the FA Cup.
In a game awash with missed chances, Trevor's moment came on the hour - albeit with a bit of good fortune.
The tireless Matt Duffield chased down a seemingly lost cause, robbed the snoozing Hailsham defender and rolled an inviting ball across to Trevor.
The former East Grinstead forward's first shot was saved, but he bundled in the rebound to set up a home clash with Ryman Division 1 side Corinthian Casuals tomorrow (Aug 27).
"We made hard work of it," said YM manager John Suter. "I thought we played some good football at times but missed good chances. Too many people wanted an extra touch. We were not very clinical, but the job was done."
Trevor has won a number of plaudits since joining at the start of the season. With a ninja's spin and glue-like close control, the fleet footed forward has the uncanny knack of making things happen and has already struck up an understanding with fellow striker Nick Flint.
However, his man of the match display against Hailsham will be the last YM will see of him for five weeks due to a lengthy suspension for a sending-off last season.
"We will miss him a lot," said Suter. "He has scored a goal a game, played very well and has added something to our side. A five-week ban just seems totally unfair. He could be out for ten matches - that's hideous."
One of Suter's chief bugbears is when players drift offside and a YM match would not be the same without the veteran boss bellowing: "Stay onside, Flinty."
Although Flint frequently incurred the wrath of his manager by straying offside, it was Duffield who paid the ultimate price, volleying home in the fourth minute only to see the lineman's flag raised.
Hailsham, who knocked the ball around well at times but without an end product, should have taken the lead on nine minutes.
Kristian Dove and Peter Cooper linked up well but Scott French's header, from no more than six yards out, was diabolical.
The openings kept coming but the poor finishing was rampant like the plague.
Flint went clean through but smashed high and wide -thank goodness for the netting behind the goal otherwise shoppers in Hilliers Garden Centre might be been interrupted by an incoming comet.
Simon Stevens flashed horribly over the bar at the other end soon after although teammate Grant Spencer finally did ; go close, hitting the crossbar I midway through the half, albeit at the wrong end.
Flint and Trevor continued to probe, the former spurning a good chance with a cheeky lob and the latter hitting the upright after a mazy dribble ten minutes before the interval.
The groans from the crowd which greeted each miss were replaced by winces after the ; break.
First referee Lloyd Rendell, who had a decent game, clob-.hered Dean Garden in the face when signaling a foul, then Flint painfully lamped Spencer in the back with a fearful drive - both contacts being met with 'oooohhs' from the stand.
YM were full value for their 60th minute goal and should have been celebrating number two had it not been for Russell Tanner's point blank stop from Trevor, which he somehow managed to hold.
The visitors, cheered on by some vocal support, spurned two great chances to draw level in the last ten minutes.
French missed the first, heading over after a good move, before the game Cooper pulled a shot wide after Tanner's long kick had caught out the YM defence.
But YM held on and have home advantage for the next round of the FA Cup.
"I don't know what Corinthian Casuals will be like," confessed Suter. "But they are in the league above us so we will just have to see on the day."
