RYE'S very own fox-in-the-box put in a predatory performance to condemn YM to a disappointing 3-1 defeat.

Striker Simon Fox put in a crafty display that befits his surname with two second half goals as well as winning the penalty which Simon Price slotted home.

In reply, YM had only one goal for their efforts — Paul Young's 87th minute penalty — although Suter believes his side might have got more out of the game had they tried to support their own forwards rather that Rye's.

"We tried very hard to set them up with goals in the first half," said Suter, who had little to be happy about. "We made errors all over the park and got what we deserved. We were poor. It was very disappointing."

Nathan Sleat started the generosity when he handed Rye their first chance with an awful square pass but Fox took one touch too many and allowed James Plumley to make the save.

Plumley then did his best to hand Rye another chance when he first dropped a cross and then got caught in possession but both times the ball was cleared to save his blushes. YM responded and should have taken the lead when Matt Duffleld picked Out Steve Davies with an accurate left wing cross. The forward, who netted a hat-trick the week before against St Leonard's, got caught in two minds whether to head or use his feet and eventually shot weakly at the keeper.

Young had the next chance when he was put through on goal after good work from Sleat, Davies and David Oakes and although the former Broadbridge Heath forward's chip beat the onrushing keeper, it sailed a foot wide of the post. "Goals change games and we had some excellent chances to score in the first half," admitted Suter.

Rye took the lead in the 58th minute with a counter-attack after Young should have been greedy and gone himself rather than laying possession off to a team-mate. The visitors broke at speed and put Fox through to cut inside Peter Durrant and shoot past Plumley.

It was 2-0 eight minutes later when the referee judged Durrant had pulled Fox's shirt as the striker shielded the ball at the near post. Price did the rest from the spot.

Fox then wrapped it up in the 78th minute when he knocked in a rebound after Plumley had saved the initial shot. "Defensively, we were all over the place," conceded Suter.

There was some consolation when Young netted from the spot after he had been fouled in the area.

Tomorrow, YM make the long journey down to Eastbourne Town who are fifth in the league, three places above YM.
Team: Plumley; Carden (Alafandi 80), Durrant (O'Hara 67), Lutwyche, Sleat; Young, Duftield, Brown, Qakes; Davies, Jarvand (Churchill 75).
